Welcome to Master Plumbing and Heating, where we’re all about moving like ducks! You might be wondering, what’s with the duck reference? Well, think about it: ducks are calm on the surface of the water but paddling like mad underneath. That’s pretty much how we roll here, especially in the Okemo Valley Region of Vermont.

Transitioning from a career in the Air Force to running a plumbing and HVAC business might seem like a drastic change, but for me, it was a natural progression. In the service, I learned the importance of leadership and serving my community, values that are still at the core of what we do at Master Plumbing and Heating. Whether it’s safeguarding public health or supporting local initiatives, we’re all about making a difference.

But let’s talk about the realities of owning a business in a small town like Ludlow. It’s not always smooth sailing. One of our biggest challenges is attracting and retaining talented team members. Vermont’s demographics and the prevailing mindset around post-secondary education pose unique hurdles. However, despite these challenges, we’ve managed to double our team’s size in just a year, and we’re not stopping there.

So, how do we keep our cool when things get hectic? It’s all about that duck mentality. On the surface, everything might seem calm and collected, but behind the scenes, we’re working tirelessly to meet our customers’ needs. Whether it’s scheduling appointments or answering inquiries, we’re paddling away to ensure a seamless experience for everyone.

And speaking of experiences, let me share a little anecdote that perfectly captures our duck philosophy. One time, during a particularly busy period, my general manager and I found ourselves working practically every weekend and even on holidays while our technicians in the field were supporting customers on countless emergency calls. To our customers, it might have seemed like business as usual, but for us, those moments were a testament to our dedication and commitment.

Community involvement is a cornerstone of our business. Whether someone is a year-round resident or just visiting during ski season, we’re here to lend a helping hand. From charitable donations to discounted services, we’re always looking for ways to give back to the community that has given us so much.

Now, work doesn’t always have to be work at Master Plumbing and Heating. We believe in being genuine and authentic, just like our team. Our efforts reflect who we are—fun-loving, yet professional. We don’t hide behind a facade of professionalism because, let’s face it, we love what we do, and we’re not afraid to show it.

But what about misconceptions? One common misconception is that owning a trades business in Vermont is easy. Let me tell you, it’s anything but. It takes dedication, hard work, and a whole lot of perseverance to succeed in this industry–just keep paddling like a duck.

So, how do we stay ahead of the curve? Training, and lots of it. In 2024 alone, we’ve invested weeks and months in training to ensure our team is equipped to handle any challenge that comes our way.

At the end of the day, what makes me proud is knowing that we’re making a difference in the Okemo Valley community. Whether it’s fixing a leaky faucet or installing a new heating system, we’re here to help, no matter what.

If you’re thinking about starting your own trades business, my advice to you is simple: respect the journey. It’s not easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding.

So there you have it, folks. That’s what it’s like owning a trades business in Vermont. It’s a wild ride, but we wouldn’t have it any other way. After all, what’s life without a little adventure?
