Painting the Winter Landscape in Watercolor (ONLINE) with Robert O’Brien

March 06, 2022

Painting the beautiful New England winter landscape in watercolor will be explored in this workshop. This workshop is open to all levels of ability with some watercolor experience suggested. Glazing techniques and layering of the subtle tints of snow will be introduced. Value, composition and painting light and shadow will be emphasized. Students will work from photo reference and learn to create a finished painting with hands on guidance provided by the instructor. A critique will be held at the end of the session.

Robert O’Brien has been painting in the watercolor medium for over 45 years. He is a full-time artist and instructor living in Vermont. In his own words, “I am drawn to mundane, ordinary, sometimes “tired” subjects that I find in abundance around where I live. Light and shadow play an important role in my creative process. I am more interested in value than color. I love to paint the spare, “colorless” world of winter in Vermont”. Some of his recent paintings have emphasized close focus aspects of a particular subject giving the piece an abstract appearance. His subjects range from crumbling landscape to flowers and more recently portraits. Robert conducts watercolor workshops locally, throughout the U.S. and abroad. He has visited France many times and while there he teaches and paints en plein air.
