Nordic Skiing and Snowshoeing

Snowboarding in Okemo ValleyAlpine Skiing & Snowboarding

Alpine skiing and snowboarding is the number one reason people visit Vermont in the wintertime. The Okemo Valley is home to numerous resorts and ski areas:  Bear Creek, Okemo Mountain Resort, Ascutney, Magic Mountain and right in our backyards.  Drive a little further and you can pick from over eight different ski mountains.  Each ski area offers its’ own flavor and style to meet your needs and interests.  Ten of the twenty ski areas that are part of Ski Vermont (skivermont.com) are located within a one hour drive from the center of the Okemo Valley.  All of these resorts offer skiing and snowboarding, along with lesson programs and rental equipment.  Some of our ski mountains are large and some are small, but all of them offer an outdoor winter experience which you will enjoy and remember for years to come.

Nordic Skiing & Snowshoeing

The Nordic skiing, (or as many people call it – cross country skiing), conjures up images of Vikings and Swedes covered in furs, blazing trails across open tundra and thru thickly wooded forests.  While modern day Nordic skiing has developed into quite a refined sport, you can still strap on your skis and head out the back door (in Vermont) and experience a winter adventure.

In the Vermont of today, classic and skate skiing styles are practiced side by side, plus you will often see snowshoe paths near skiing lanes.  South-central Vermont is home to numerous Nordic centers.  Many inns located throughout the valley have snowshoeing trails which lead out from their back doors.  Snowshoeing is one of the best winter sports, since you can go anywhere and explore just about any terrain.

Vermont is home to the Catamount Trail a 300 mile cross-country ski trail which extends from the Massachusetts border in the south, all the way to the Canadian border in the north.  The trail passes right through the Okemo Valley.  For more information on the Catamount Trail, please visit Catamount Trail

Please remember to dress properly when you are being active outdoors in the winter.  Layering of clothes, starting with a good under layer is a great way to go.  And be sure to protect your head and face from the element.  This includes a good sunscreen, which will protect your skin from sun and weather.
