Road Cycling

The Okemo Valley offers numerous cycling options for novice to advanced riders of all ages.  We have posted a series of bike tours through Cavendish, Chester, Ludlow, Weston,  Plymouth,  Mt Holly and Weathersfield below for your convenience.  This can also be downloaded here:  Okemo Valley Cycling Routes

Terrain varies from easy to advanced, as well as mix of asphalt and dirt roads.

Okemo Valley has long been known for its excellent cycling.   Lodging properties are located along each route. Many innkeepers can assist you in planning your trip. Bike Rentals repairs and guided tours are available in the Okemo Valley.

19 Mile Ascutney Tour

Reading Store on Rt 106
Proceed North on Rt 106 for 1 mile. Turn Right onto Rt 44 East at 1815 House Restaurant. NOTE: After you cross the first Bridge watch for a “Raspberry” sign on your left. Follow 4.3 miles, Brownsville General Store on the right. SEARCH for Covered Bridges there are two just off RT 44

From Brownsville:
Follow Rt 44, 1.6 miles and turn Right onto Rt 44-A. Follow 3 miles passing Ascutney Mt State Park to intersection of Rt 5. Turn Right. Follow 1.9 miles to intersection of Rt 131. Follow 131 under I-91.

From I-91 and Rt 131
Use CAUTION. Traffic can be heavy. Five miles is up hill. Follow for 6.5 miles to the Junction of Rt 106 / 131. Turn right Rt 106 North 4.2 miles to Reading Store. Total Distance 19.5 miles


22 Mile Grafton Tour – Starts in Grafton, VT

Village Green of Grafton
Starting at the Village Green of Grafton go South over the bridge and follow Rt. 35 and 121 South this is a pleasant and pretty ride, for the next 8 miles.

Split in the Road
Rt35 and Rt. 121 split follow 35 1.5 mile uphill grade, The road changes from tar to dirt and back again.  The view at the top of the hill is a great picture opportunity. 7 miles.

Grafton Road
Right turn onto Grafton Road and head back into Grafton. Grafton has much history with a Church, museum and old Post Office 7 miles.


24 Mile Tour – Great Towns …Great Tour

From Proctorsville Village Green
Proceed East on Rt 131, follow .4 miles to the second (2nd) left turn onto“Twenty Mile Stream Road” Look for the sign it is hard to see. Your ride will begin with some stunning terrain. in just over 6 miles begin a steep up hill section on dirt. At 7.5 miles turn left on Reading-Tyson Road (Asphalt) At 8 miles Colby Pond is on your left. This is a good spot to test your fishing skills.

In .4 mile begin a steep down hill section of 2.5 miles. Check you brakes and use caution. NOTE: A right turn at the four way intersection will take you to Camp Plymouth State Park. You can enjoy a swim, canoe ride or have lunch in the park. Admission Charged. Turn Left, South on Rt 100. The Echo Lake Inn is directly in front of you before the turn.

From Rt 100
Follow Rt 100 South for 1.7 miles turn Left onto Red Bridge Road. This is the first road after Carpenters Point Road. You will reach the Red Bridge is .2 miles. Great view of Lake Rescue, Dam and falls. Follow .2 miles to a “T” intersection. Turn Right on to East Lake Road (dirt). Follow 1.3 miles to Rt 100.

From Rt 100 and East Lake Road
Use Caution, Turn Left on Rt 100 South. Follow Rt 100 1.3 miles to Junction of Rt 103. Turn Right , take the first paved road to your right, Buttermilk Falls Rd. Follow this road approx one mile. There are paths which lead from the right side of the road down to the Falls. Great place for a dip in the cold water and ample photo opportunities.

From: Buttermilk Falls
Return to Rt 103 and turn left (South) approx 1.5 miles to Ludlow. Follow Rt 103 South. Follow South 3 miles, Turn Left onto Rt 131, just prior to the rail road tracks. The Green is on your right in .5 miles.


27 Mile tour – Chester Green

Chester Green
Chester Starting on the Chester Green head East onto Rt. 11 (This is a high traffic road please use caution and wear safety gear.) You are looking for right hand turn (Chester Hardware Store) onto Rt. 35 South. The terrain limbs slowly for about 5 miles passing farms, forest and streams. At 7.5 miles the RT 35 goes down hill and enters the village of Grafton in 8 miles.

Grafton
Grafton Natural History Museum and old Post Office. Turn left at the foot of the hill onto RT 121-RT 35 South and follow. At the RT. 121 and RT 35 split, follow Rt. 121 to the Left, to the village of Saxton River – 4 miles.

Pleasant Valley Road
From Saxton River village Follow Rt. 121, 1/4 mile to Pleasant Valley Rd, with small rolling hills and green pastures. In 5 miles, Pleasant Valley Road meets RT 103. Turn Left onto Rt. 103 and follow to Chester. RT 103 makes a sharp right turn in Chester. Proceed straight to the Chester Green-total 6 miles. RT 103 is a high traffic road but has wide shoulders. TOTAL TRIP 24 miles.

Pleasant Valley Road
From Saxton River village Follow Rt. 121, 1/4 mile to Pleasant Valley Rd, with small rolling hills and green pastures. In 5 miles, Pleasant Valley Road meets RT 103. Turn Left onto Rt. 103 and follow to Chester.

Rt 103
RT 103 makes a sharp right turn in Chester. Proceed straight to the Chester Green-total 6 miles. RT 103 is a high traffic road but has wide shoulders. TOTAL TRIP 27 miles.


28 Mile tour – Chester

Chester Green
Start on the Chester Green head West on Rt. 11 to Andover, 10 miles. (This is a high traffic road please use caution and wear safety gear.)

Route 121 to Grafton
Left hand turn onto Rt. 121 to Grafton a 1 mile hill awaits you. The road changes from tar to dirt and back again the next 10 miles into Grafton.

Grafton
In Grafton take a left and head for the bridge 1/4 mile Left turn onto Rt. 35 and follow, 8 miles.

Route 11
Road ends and take a left onto Rt. 11 1/4 mile into the Chester Green. Chester offers many shops and a pleasant place to rest after a long Vermont ride.


40 Mile Bike Tour

Village Green in Proctorsville
Located on Rt 131 just East of the Rt 103/ 131 Junction. There is plenty of parking. Exit and turn right on Depot St., Follow .4 miles to Junction of Rt 103.

From: Rt 103 and Depot St.
Follow Rt 103 South for 4.2 miles. Use caution in the steep downhill section. Turn Left onto Rt 10 follow. At 3.3 cross a bridge in .3 miles Leave Rt 10, at the “Y” where RT 10 curves Left. Follow down hill 1.6 miles into Village of North Springfield. Continue to the T intersection.

From: North Springfield
Intersection and Stop Sign with Rt 106, turn Left uphill, use caution and stay on Right shoulder. Take the 1st Right following sign to North Springfield Dam (.1 miles). Note: This is a good area to see wild life as you cross the dam. Cross the Dam turn Left at the Stop sign. Proceed 3.8 miles passing Wellwood Orchard Rd, Cady Hill Rd and turn Right onto Plains Road.

From: Plains Rd
Follow to a four way intersection (2.2 miles) and stop sign (dirt roads). Turn Left onto Gulf Road (not marked). Follow .4 miles to Route 131, turn Left. Follow .6 mile turn Right on Amsden School Road. Watch for the turn after a concrete bridge. Follow .4 miles to a stop sign, turn right on to Route 106 North. Follow to the village of Reading. Good spot for a break, lunch or a snack.


Okemo Mountain Forest Loop

Ludlow – Mount Holly – Weston
This tour can start in Ludlow, Mount Holly or Weston.

Recommended Parking Locations:  in Ludlow, park at the clocktower next to the Chamber of Commerce information center, or in the Park ‘n Ride lot next to the fire house.  In Weston, park at the junction of Rte 100 north and Rte 155.  No suggestions currently for Mount Holly.

Level: difficult (long climbs) and great downhills. Directions for this ride start in Ludlow at the Chamber of Commerce info center

  • Turn North out of parking lot onto Rte 103 N
  • Follow VT-103 – 4.8 mi
  • Turn left at Healdville Rd – 2.4 mi   (across from Harry’s Cafe)
  • Slight right to stay on Healdville Rd – 1.3 mi
  • Slight left at Church St – 0.2 mi
  • Continue on Tarbellville Rd – 1.1 mi (junction at Belmont General Store – keep the store on your right)
  • Turn left at VT-155/VT Route 155 Continue to follow VT-155 – 6.5 mi
  • Turn left at Rte-100/VT-100 Continue to follow VT-100 – 6.9 mi
  • Continue on Andover St – 0.1 mi
  • Turn left at Main St/Rte-103 S/VT-103 Continue to follow VT-103 – 0.4 mi
